Chapter Ten

Storm turned out her porch light as she watched Nate finally drive off. That was a close call. She’d sensed him so near her that she had almost turned around and kissed him. What was wrong with her? She should be pissed at the way he was always playing doctor and going overboard. But dammit she’d never kissed or even wanted to kiss someone she hadn’t known long. Especially, a client. The urge was so powerful she had to rush inside and lock the door before she allowed another mistake to happen.

A few minutes later, she took a warm shower, threw on a pair of holey jeans, a long-sleeved white T-shirt, and took three Aleves. She sat at her kitchen table waiting on everyone to show. After a few seconds, she jumped out of her chair, not able to keep still. She paced to the refrigerator, opened the door, and stared at the bare shelves. You need to shop sooner or later. Gah.

Entertaining and shopping were not her things. Not that she was entertaining, but people were coming over. Hurry up. Waiting was not one of her virtues either.

Less than half an hour later someone knocked. She opened the door to find Hazel, Rose, and Dusti. “Come in,” she yelled, then left the door unlocked for Brye. Leave it to Brye to make a grand entrance, probably sporting a new Gucci bag or hundred-dollar stilettos. Talk to her. Make her more aware she needs to save her money in case the renovation job doesn’t work out.

“Dear Lord, child. What happened to your face?” Her grandmother’s friend seemed truly concerned.

“Long story,” Storm said, not wanting to start off-topic.

“Okay. So how’s your mother? I’ve been meaning to visit, but one of my workers didn’t show today.” Hazel sat at the kitchen table. “It’s not like her to not call.”

“I hope she’s okay. If it’s the same girl I met at your shop, she’s a sweet girl,” Rose said.

“Yep. That’s Maggie.” Hazel glanced at Storm. “So no changes, huh?”

“None,” Storm informed.

“We’ll fix that soon, hon.” The woman pulled an antique-looking book from her oversized bag. It reminded her of her first grade teacher’s school-bag, the kind that held everything one could imagine.

Brye sauntered in, dressed perfectly. Storm didn’t care for such things, unless it was a special occasion, even then it was hard parting with her money. The little she made went into renovating old houses, such as the one she lived in now.

“Did I miss anything?” Brye zeroed in on the ancient book. “What’s that?”

“My almanac. Some call it a Book of Shadows.” Hazel patted the yellowish-white leather cover. “Sit. Let’s start, shall we? Okay, first we need your mother’s amulet.”

“Her what?” What’s an amulet?

“You know. Her charm,” Hazel said.

“What charm?” Storm asked.

“Her crystal necklace. The one that warded off evil and once housed your magic. We talked about this last time, right? Or did I pick up the necklace from one of your thoughts?” She squinted. “My memory is shot.”

That wasn’t good.
